Gems + Elements = Addiction

Puzzle games on the Nintendo DS/DSi are a dime a dozen and they come in all so many different flavors from Pokemon licensed to Japanese imports that make almost no sense, and I play a lot of them because I have an addiction to puzzle games no matter the platform they come in.

Well thanks to a meet and greet with Storm City Games during E3 I got  a chance to check out Gem Quest 4 Elements, and I have to say I am impressed with this game and the challenge that it had to offer with a nice mix of puzzle with a fantasy story in the background.

You start the game with a little mix of hide and seek in an ilustration, you have to find all the pieces to four “keys” to unloack the key to the book that holds the 4 guardian creatures that have 4 puzzle platforms to unlock wich at the end of the 4 platforms you will have “find the difference” puzzle of the Guardians picture.

Overall the best part of the game is the elemental platforms where you make a chain connection of 4 or more in order to clear a path for the elemental essence to spread and eventually reach the fountain which completes the level, and it may sound simple but you have to race against the clock with boulders, block, and frozen gems impeding your path through the map. The game offers a huge map that will take more than the two screens to view, within the map itself you will find arrow heads that activate when elemental essence touches it and it will occasionally activate a chain reaction to clear large parts of the map and allow you to continue moving along the path.

With a total of 64 levels I really could not put the game down to the point where I had to finish it till I finished it, I am serious I had to finish this game since I was so into the game play. The game also offers 4 power ups that you activate by eleminating gems, a spade to destroy one tile, a bomb to remove boulders or clear a section of gems, a swap power up to switch one gem for another, and finally a reshuffle to well reshuffle the gems. If you have an itch for some really good puzzle games go ahead and check out this title and you will love it, I am now restarting my second play through to just keep enjoying the game. So if it is not clear to anyone I love this game and I highly recommend it.
