New Tools of Destruction - Dungeon Defenders Review

“Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future”

- Jon F Kennedy

Dungeon Defenders takes this statement and makes it loud and clear, the game is a 3-D environment built around the tower defense style of game play. With multiple entry points for enemies and various defense points you will gather mana in order to build defense and attack towers as well as using your special skills during the battle phase.

The game is simple in nature but a strategy is always the need for the deed, with the build phase players or player will take mana scattered around the map in treasure chest and start placing offenses and defenses around the desired areas, then once that is done you can start the attack phase in which the invading forces will start their attack. Does this sound familiar?

It should this is the most basic form of Tower Defense games there is, now what makes Dungeon Defenders different? Well that’s where the game gets really fun, you have four classes to choose from The Squire, The Monk, The Huntress, and the Apprentice, do these sound a little “young”? They should these are the children of the heroes that originally sealed the great evil they now face. Each class is a play style all it’s own, for example the Squire will swing his large sword for attacks and hold it up to block attacks as well, or if you prefer range attacks then the Huntress may be your style with traps as her “towers” and a launching weapon with limited clips of ammo her style requires a lot more finesse than the Squire or the Apprentice which are the recommended starting classes.

Each character will have different defense towers to choose from, the Squire and the Apprentice will set up basic attack and defend points that will function as such versus the Huntress and the Monk will set up more complex “towers” like traps and Chi Element like Bubble fields that can slow down and poison enemies. The weapons much like the playable characters have a lot of personality, almost as if Final Fantasy inspired. For example I have played as a Squire and I wielded a simple knights blade to a complex oversized buster sword inspired by Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, and at the same time you have the Huntress wielding hand guns, riffles, and even the all might Apeture Science Portal Gun.

Also one more weapon in your arsenal of destruction is the familiar, a small pet like companion that comes along for the ride. These can vary on their appearance and their abilities, for example the Dragons can fire projectiles and the small Flying Ligers attack enemies with bites. But all this comes in as secondary reason to choosing a familiar, they also can affect a heroes stats, whether it’s bonus health, attack power, or even your towers can be affected by the familiars presence.

This game offers a lot of variety in game play based on the class, weapons, familiars, and all the way down to who you choose to defend the field with.

Online play is stable, people can easily play with no need for communication if you choose to play that way. Everyone knows what needs to be done and so far I have not had a negative play experience at all and I have put in some serious play time online, I can honestly say that I have nothing but love for this game from it’s great cinematic artwork, to the music and sound effects it brings to the playing field. Dungeon Defenders offers a great experience on any platform you play it and you will be hooked on this game once you pick up the rhythm it plays on.

Stable controls, great graphics, fun music, and character deasigns that scream cute and deadly, there are few reasons not to pick this game up on your platform of choice.
