Musical Fart Off!

Once a upon a time DreamWorks created a franchise about an Ogre, a Princess, and a Donkey… Yeah I wonder how that story pitch went inside the Dreamworks office. Better yet I wonder how did the pitch for the musical theater version went, well you see we are taking the movie and making some dance numbers, some original music, and oh yeah there will be some burp and fart jokes in it for good measure.
And well it is an experience to be had, they did a great job translating the movie experience into musical theater. In fact they added some new points to the story, for example who Shrek’s parents were and why he is so lonely, or better yet who Farquaad is and where he comes from.
The music is very catchy and in fact it does a fantastic job of adding a new dimension to the world of Shrek, and just like the original film they take some freedoms with satire from other musicals and the movie series itself. The dance numbers can go from simple skips and walks around the stage to puppets and elaborate full stage movement. One of the more amazing things to see during the show is Donkey and Dragon’s musical number, Dragon is performed in such a way that it just left me breathless with the way she was represented on stage and the singer who voiced her was just amazing.
When it all comes together the comedy from the films is still there, the music and the choreography make it so that you will have a different understanding of the world of Shrek and if you were already a fan of it then you will fall in love with it all over again, if not then be prepared to join the ranks of the Ogres clan.
Personally this is one musical that I won’t soon forget let alone stop listening to the soundtrack and of course my Shrek woopy cushion that I got when I went to see it.
